Fountain Pens for the Million: The History of Conway Stewart 1905 - 2005
by Stephen Hull

The book details the history of Conway Stewart over 10 chapters in chronological order from their founding in 1905 up to their liquidation in 1975 until, after several abortive attempts at a revival, the company re-surfaced in 1994. There are more than 700 'actual size' colour images of pens, stylos and pencils (including some rare prototypes), and other images of associated items, advertising and leaflets. There are also personal reminiscences from relatives of the founders of the company, as well as from former employees and directors. The appendices include lists of the known Conway Stewart model numbers, details of the various Dinkie models over the 50 years they were manufactured, and a comprehensive table showing the Le Tigre models made by Conway Stewart for the Belgian market.

This book features many rare advertisements, summary tables of companies involved in the trade (including American and European manufacturers) and over 80 monographs written by Steve over the years, featuring the most important companies and personnel involved in the development of the English fountain pen industry. The book is based on information gleaned from the British stationery trade press over the period, much of which has never been published elsewhere before.

The Neptune Pen
A History of Burge, Warren & Ridgley

Written by Steve Hull with his friend Mike Bryan, this book catalogues the history of one of the earliest English pen makers. Burge, Warren & Ridgley (BWR) were virtually unknown to collectors until this book was published.

The book follows the history of the company from its founding c.1860 as a maker of imitation jet (i.e. vulcanite) mourning jewellery, to the production of their first stylo in 1879, up until the business was finally acquired by the Jewel Pen Co. Ltd., c.1933. It is packed with pictures of rare BWR pens and stylos, and there are four appendices listing the known model numbers with their dates, a reproduction of a complete Neptune catalogue from 1917, Neptune promotional items and advertising from the stationery trade press.
